Optimising functional ingredients for enhanced nutritional values

Now that functional ingredients have established themselves as a dynamic market segment, the optimization of particle design has become increasingly important. The growing complexity of functional products is putting greater demands on established production processes. Fluidized bed and spouted bed processes offer manufacturers almost unlimited possibilities in terms of optimised particle design and the functionalisation of ingredients.

Fluidized bed solutions for optimized ingredient production

With populations aging in virtually every nation across the globe, consumer demand for solutions that can tackle age-related conditions such as sarcopenia and keep people active for longer is growing at an impressive rate. The industrial-scale production of innovative food ingredients requires state-of-the-art technologies. Fluidized bed processes offer manufacturers almost unlimited possibilities in terms of optimized particle design and the functionalization of ingredients.

In one step – Drying by fluid bed spray granulation

Thermal drying is an essential process in almost all industries to convert liquid or moist raw materials into solid dry products. A wide variety of processes and apparatus are available to carry out drying technology applications. The selection of suitable processes is usually complex and depends on the prevailing conditions. One possible basic principle for drying technology applications is fluidized bed technology. The fluidized bed is characterized by very intensive process control.

Design and operation of energy-efficient fluid bed systems – Integrated approach saves costs

Designing and operating fluid bed systems with energy efficiency: Systems for agglomeration, spray granulation and coating in the fluid bed are used in nearly all industries with the production and refinement of solid product forms. In addition to the material and application properties of the manufactured products their manufacturing costs can also be significantly influenced already during the design of the fluid bed systems.

Instantizing made easy – Agglomeration by fluid bed process – Granules from powder

High dust content and bad flowability often cause problems during the filling, dosing or application of powdery substances. This situation can be improved considerably through agglomeration using the fluid bed technology. Glatt Ingenieurtechnik designs und constructs these kind of fluid bed plants for various applications. (German article)

Spray Granulation Gives Solid Materials Customized Properties

Flowability, dustlessness and easy dosing — these are some of the plus points of granulates produced by fluidized or spouted bed technology. The product design can be specifically influenced by process engineering. (German article)

Large-scale plant for continuous additive coating based on fluidized bed technology

Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH has completed a fluid bed plant in Scandinavia for the continuous coating of additives with a capacity of several tons per hour. We spoke to Christian Heiermann, Engineering Sales Manager in the Food, Feed & Fine Chemicals Division, about this large-scale plant and about Glatt’s role as an engineering partner in a wide range of industrial sectors. Everything according to the rules – Hygiene design for fluid bed and spouted bed systems

Product safety for food, biotechnology or similar applications: Fluid bed and spouted bed systems of various designs and sizes are used for granulation, agglomeration, coating or heat transfer processes, such as drying or cooling, in various branches of industry. In addition to product properties, production and product safety are also essential elements in establishing such processes. In particular, the respective hygienic conditions require compliance with special planning and design principles in plant conception. (German article)

Dry material processing – From the feasibility study to the production plant

Glatt’s Technology Center in Weimar stands for innovative technologies for the production of granules and pellets from powders and/or solid-containing liquids. In the last 12 months alone, more than 120 customers from 17 countries used our advanced equipment to develop new product forms by feasibility studies or to optimize the properties of already established products for their production processes. Apparatuses and plants of different sizes are available for such studies – from a laboratory via a pilot up to a production scale.

Fluid Bed Coating – Changing Properties of Solids as Desired

Coating of particles is a critical process step for many manufacturing processes. After all, coating essentially determines the product quality. The appropriate process must be found to determine the properties of as needed for the application. The following article describes, what need to be considered when developing particles.
