Spray Granulation Gives Solid Materials Customized Properties

Flowability, dustlessness and easy dosing — these are some of the plus points of granulates produced by fluidized or spouted bed technology. The product design can be specifically influenced by process engineering. (German article)

Large-scale plant for continuous additive coating based on fluidized bed technology

Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH has completed a fluid bed plant in Scandinavia for the continuous coating of additives with a capacity of several tons per hour. We spoke to Christian Heiermann, Engineering Sales Manager in the Food, Feed & Fine Chemicals Division, about this large-scale plant and about Glatt’s role as an engineering partner in a wide range of industrial sectors. Dry material processing – From the feasibility study to the production plant

Glatt’s Technology Center in Weimar stands for innovative technologies for the production of granules and pellets from powders and/or solid-containing liquids. In the last 12 months alone, more than 120 customers from 17 countries used our advanced equipment to develop new product forms by feasibility studies or to optimize the properties of already established products for their production processes. Apparatuses and plants of different sizes are available for such studies – from a laboratory via a pilot up to a production scale.

Fluid Bed Coating – Changing Properties of Solids as Desired

Coating of particles is a critical process step for many manufacturing processes. After all, coating essentially determines the product quality. The appropriate process must be found to determine the properties of as needed for the application. The following article describes, what need to be considered when developing particles. (German article)

Cleanly separated – filters in fluid bed systems, an overview

For the production of granulates from solid and/or liquid raw materials and the coating of particles, fluid bed plants offer many possibilities for influencing the granulate properties. The process chamber of fluid bed systems must be permeable to the process gas at the bottom and at the top. It is usually bounded at the bottom by an inflow floor and at the top by a filter. The filter is thus of decisive importance for the process. (German article)

Full Flexibility with Spouted-Bed – Glatt’s ProCell continuous spouted-bed equipment makes high-quality granulates and pellets

At the end of 2009, one of the world’s largest spouted bed systems for granulation started at the Dresden-based contract manufacturer IPC. A ProCell 250 from Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH enables a so far unreached flexibility for agglomeration and spray granulation processes. Liquid and/or solid raw materials can be processed to granulates and pellets or existing particles can be coated. Batch or continuous operation is possible.

Encapsulating volatile substances – Product optimization with artificial neural networks

Food and feed products have to be developed with a focus on high yields of active ingredients and low formulation costs at the same time. As a typical industrial application, the encapsulation of volatile substances, e.g. flavors or PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids), into dense and free-flowing granules is explained in this paper. This process improves storage stability, protects the products from oxygen and can be carried out with a continuously operating spouted bed apparatus.

Gentle granulation of emulsions

Product and process optimization using artificial neural networks – case study using the example of encapsulation of volatile substances by spray granulation. Food and animal nutrition products must be developed with a focus on high yields of active ingredients while maintaining low formulation costs. A continuously operated spouted bed apparatus was used to perform the process, which involves spray granulation of a liquid matrix material containing the active substance to be encapsulated. It’s all in the combination – Coating in the food and pharmaceutical industries, part 1

Fluid bed equipment is widely used in many areas of industry. A particular focus of the use of fluid bed technology is the coating of particles as well as encapsulation. Especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries there are many applications. In addition, complementary technologies can be used to achieve special product properties. The first part of this article describes the basics of coating, the second part in the next issue will deal with the plant technology. (German article)

It’s all in the combination – Coating in the food and pharmaceutical industries, part 2

Fluid bed equipment is widely used in many areas of industry. A particular focus of the use of fluid bed technology is the coating of particles as well as encapsulation. Especially in the food and pharmaceutical industries there are many applications. In addition, complementary technologies can be used to achieve special product properties.
