In some regions, the departure from agricultural sewage sludge use is coming faster than the sewage sludge ordinance requires. This was demonstrated at the sewage sludge specialist forum held by the Huber company in Berching, where a good 300 participants discussed concepts for sewage sludge utilization, phosphorus recovery and inter-municipal cooperation.
Jan Kirchhof, Glatt, presented PHOS4green as a solution for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge ash and its residue-free conversion into commercially available standard fertilizers.
Due to the amendments of the Sewage Sludge Ordinance (AbfKlärV) as well as the Fertilizer Ordinance (DümV) and the Fertilizer Ordinance (DüV) that have come into force in recent years, water management is facing new major challenges. In addition to requirements for phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge, the agricultural utilization of sewage sludge, which was still common practice for many operators in recent years, is increasingly being restricted due to arable land restrictions. Land application is currently declining rapidly, and nationwide transport routes are leading to drastic cost increases for sewage sludge disposal. In order to be able to maintain disposal security in the future, regional concepts as well as future-oriented strategies and solutions urgently need to be developed jointly. Time is increasingly pressing, since according to AbfKlärV, wastewater treatment plant operators must define intended measures for phosphorus recovery by 2023 at the latest. Innovative approaches to solutions were presented at the event. The presented concepts guarantee a secured sewage sludge utilization. In addition to legal requirements and political developments, practical options for sewage sludge treatment and recycling were presented. The event was moderated by Prof. Dr.-Ing.
